The process of overcoming drug addiction is long and arduous. Repeated cycles of addiction and recovery not only pose significant physical and psychological challenges to individuals but also deeply affect their family lives. In order to assist incarcerated individuals with drug use histories in maintaining stable recovery and rebuilding life direction, Chiayi Prison has collaborated with the Mindfulness Care Association since 2014 to implement Mindfulness Group Counseling Programs, gradually establishing a sustainable addiction recovery support model.
The program begins with the Mindfulness New Life Education Course, which integrates addiction recovery skills with mindfulness-based therapeutic approaches. Through these courses, inmates are guided to enhance self-awareness and emotional regulation. Participants are further invited to join the Mindfulness Family, where continued mindfulness practice is encouraged and incorporated into daily life, providing long-term accompaniment from incarceration to post-release. This ongoing support assists inmates in developing positive values and achieving stable reintegration into society.
The curriculum also incorporates Zentangle art and career planning. Through creative expression, participants improve concentration, relieve stress, and ease physical and mental tension, while simultaneously preparing for post-release employment. One inmate, “A-Ming” (pseudonym), who was incarcerated due to drug use, sent his Zentangle artwork home, allowing his family to witness his positive transformation. Another inmate, “A-Tian” (pseudonym), experienced the loss of a loved one during incarceration and found comfort and strength through letters written by the instructor, feeling supported during his time of grief.
On December 5, Chiayi Prison and the Mindfulness Care Association jointly held a Mindfulness Family event, attended by 56 inmates with histories of drug use. Under the guidance of mindfulness instructors, participants experienced care and encouragement, expressing that they felt “companionship, warmth, and no longer alone.” They also noted that mindfulness practice helped them learn emotional control, stabilize their mood, manage impulsive behaviors, and cultivate a mindful attitude.
The program further integrates family-centered support to help inmates serve their sentences with peace of mind and repair family relationships. At the annual Family Day event held on December 12, families of 10 inmates participated. Inmates expressed apologies, love, and gratitude to their families, creating a deeply emotional atmosphere of connection and reconciliation. Tears and warmth filled the venue, as compassion and blessings provided powerful support to the inmates.
Chiayi Prison stated, “Drugs cause individuals to lose their way and tear families apart. However, as long as there is care, willingness to wait, and determination to change, rebuilding is possible. The path to reintegration cannot be walked alone; family support plays a critical role in successful reentry into society.”
Through this series of programs—including group learning, Mindfulness Family activities, and Family Day interactions—care is not only conveyed but a concrete support network is established. These efforts help inmates rediscover themselves through companionship and understanding, allowing love and support to become a solid foundation for their return to society.
