From Incarceration to Hope

Among the freshmen enrolled in the Chiayi Prison Open University Class for the 2025 academic year (114th academic year in ROC calendar) is an inspiring new student—“Ah-Hao” (alias). Before coming to Chiayi Prison, Ah-Hao was a student in the Cheng Te Senior High School program at Hualien Prison. This year, he not only successfully obtained his high school diploma but also graduated as the top student in his senior class. His diligence and commitment to learning demonstrate that even within high walls, one can still elevate oneself through steadfast determination.

The Correctional Association of the Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as the “Correctional Association”) has long shown care and support for correctional staff (including their children) and inmates who strive for academic achievement. To recognize Ah-Hao’s hard work and unyielding spirit, the Association awarded him a scholarship of NT$2,000, which was presented on its behalf by Chiayi Prison Secretary Ms. Huang Shan-Chen.

Moved upon receiving the award, Ah-Hao said: “I have never taken first place in anything since I was a child. I never thought that as long as I put in the effort, I could achieve it too. My past mistakes brought me to rock bottom, but learning has been like a ray of light, helping me rediscover my self-worth. I study not to show off to anyone, but to prove to myself that I can stand up again.”

When Ah-Hao first entered prison, he felt uncertain and lost. Yet, through the encouragement of his teachers and the inspiration of the curriculum, he gradually ignited a passion for knowledge.

Since its establishment in 1998 (ROC Year 87), the Lutsao face-to-face teaching center has a history of 27 years. By the end of the second semester of the 2024 academic year (ROC Year 113), a total of 4,957 inmate enrollments had been recorded, with 51 graduates and 455 scholarship recipients recognized for outstanding academic performance.

Ah-Hao expressed that joining this learning family is both an honor and a responsibility. He hopes not only to complete his studies but also to become a role model who inspires others in the future: “Through my story, I want more people to understand—so long as you are willing to start, it is never too late.”
