The Lunar New Year symbolizes new beginnings and family reunions. To ensure that inmates can also feel the warmth of family and the power of love during this traditional festival, Chiayi Prison organized a telephone filial piety event on January 13 for inmates whose families could not travel long distances for visitation. Chunghwa Telecom’s Chiayi Branch generously provided 15 phone lines free of charge, allowing 883 inmates who applied for the service to extend New Year’s greetings to their families in advance.

Additionally, face-to-face visitation sessions were arranged on January 15 and 16, spanning four rounds over two days. A total of 421 inmates and 780 family members participated. Despite the biting cold on the event days, the enthusiasm of families eager to reunite was unwavering. Long lines of people waiting to check in formed early outside the administrative building for each visitation session.

As correctional facilities are densely populated, Chiayi Prison took public health precautions while preparing for this event, especially considering the ongoing presence of influenza and measles in the community. Efforts were made to ensure both the health and safety of the institution and a smooth reunion for inmates and their families on the eve of the Lunar New Year.

"As the festive season comes, so does the longing for family." The visitation site was filled with warm interactions between inmates and their families, creating an atmosphere brimming with love and joy. Particularly touching were the playful exchanges between children and their parents, which brought immense happiness and fulfillment to the inmates. Many expressed their gratitude to the prison for offering this opportunity, which strengthened their resolve to reform, return to society, and embrace a brighter future.

However, happy moments always seem to pass too quickly. As time flew by, the event concluded with inmates and their families exchanging heartfelt blessings and reluctant farewells, drawing this meaningful occasion to a perfect close.
